This year’s Minnesota State Fair is taking place in St. Paul, and it’s a family-friendly event that’s been going on since 1859.
When livestock couldn’t be transported long distance, the Minnesota State Fair had to relocate a few times in its early years in order to better serve the state’s various regions.
Vaccination records will not be required for admission to the fair, which will operate on the honour system. There will be a social distancing requirement for visitors who have not been vaccinated.
Indoors or out, there are no restrictions on the number of people who can attend. All visitors entering buildings must wear masks, which can be obtained at the building’s entrance.
Gates will open daily at 11 a.m., three hours later than in previous years; indoor areas were designed to allow for more space between vendors and visitors; rides and games will be spread apart by an additional 15 feet to help with social distancing; and the larger free concerts were moved to Chevy Park, a 15-acre spot in the back of the fairgrounds, from the 3-acre Chevy Court. The pandemic modifications were made in response to the recent outbreak of the Ebola virus.
Because of the fair’s transitory nature, a rival fair was able to open in Minneapolis. They were both well-attended and eventually merged at what is now the modern Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, about half way between the two regions.
After Labor Day, the fair is open for a total of twelve days in late August. Over the course of the event’s nearly two-week run, over 1,600,000 people attended. By daily attendance, the Minnesota State Fair has been ranked as the largest fair in the United States. As far as the longest-running fairs go, the Texas State Fair has been voted the longest-running in the United States.
