It was in the early 1980s that Dick’s was purchased by Edward W. Stack and his siblings from their father. To better serve its customers, the Stack Corporation formed a board of directors, added new locations, and moved its headquarters to Pittsburgh in 1994. A year after taking over as chairman and CEO after his father’s death in 1984, he led the company through its IPO in 2002.
Dick’s was primarily based in the Eastern United States until 2009, when it expanded to include the Pacific Northwest and the West Coast. As of mid-2008, there were more than 357 Dick’s locations in 38 states.
Boston, St. Louis’ suburb Brentwood, and Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighbourhood were all targeted by True Runner in 2012.
In early 2017, the stores shut down.
Dick’s opened two stores in the Washington, D.C. metro area, one each in Pittsburgh and Tysons, Virginia, for women’s athleisure, fitness, and lifestyle retailer Chelsea Collective in 2015. As of 2017, all of these establishments had already shut their doors.
